4 Things Every Driver Should Watch Out For This Fall

By September 27, 2018June 11th, 2021Uncategorized

As one of the leading providers of car insurance in Philadelphia, we have created these guidelines to help you stay safe while driving this fall.

Leaves

While autumn leaves are lovely to look at, they can make navigating roadways very difficult when they get wet. Wet leaves can be as slippery as ice and can cover traffic lines, potholes, and other road hazards, so make sure you always drive slowly and avoid braking too hard when passing through damp leaves.

Rain

“Rain, rain, go away” is what we wish we could say, but it is a fact that some cities can see an increase in rainfall during the fall season. Hydroplaning becomes a major concern when large puddles start to accumulate, so make sure you always maintain a safe distance between you and the car in front of you. If the meteorologist in your area is calling for fog, you should note never to use your high beams. Instead, you should use either your low beams or fog lights and be prepared for cars ahead of you making sudden stops.

Sun

Fog is not the only thing that can reduce your visibility while driving during fall. Sun glare can also be a major driving hazard. Sun glare and oncoming traffic lights can impede your vision for a period after exposure, making it hard for you to see the surrounding traffic, pedestrians, or animals on the roadways. To avoid a car accident due to the glare of the sun or oncoming traffic lights, you should invest in a pair of sunglasses to keep in your car, just in case you need to protect your eyes.

Pedestrians

Fall usually marks the beginning of another school year for children all across the country, which means you as a driver must exercise extra precaution when out on the roadways. Be sure that you always drive the speed limit while in a school zone and keep an eye out for children who dash across streets without looking. Remember that is not only illegal but dangerous to pass a school bus in most states, so if you see a bus with its stop sign extended, make sure you stop and let the children safely exit the bus.
